The newly-promoted Group Executive Mrs Emma Gray says ANZ data quality and governance principles have put data at the centre of decision making at the Bank. Mrs Gray, who was until recently Chief Data Officer, asked not to view data projects through a technology lens.

Highlighting the importance of data quality and governance in the new world disrupted by Fintech and challenged by crises – both the bushfires and COVID-19 – she praised open banking is “spurring us to do more“, elevating our focus on data quality and automation.

Data Quality and Governance

“Data projects that focus on outcomes for customers should understand how processes need to adapt to facilitate data flow for a successful project”.

Articulating the importance of Data quality and governance on ANZ’s blog, Mrs Gray said providing the latest data at the finger-tips of executives is important for decision-making, particularly in a crisis. For this, confidence in the data source and how it’s managed till storage is important.

Cautioning IT and Data pros against viewing data projects through the technology lens, she said doing so could “risk missing the boat“.

Open Banking as a catalyst

As Data has two customers: Internal decision-makers and External customers of the Bank, the data function has to cater to the different needs ensuring they can trust the latest data.

Praising Open banking, the ANZ Group Executive said investments in data quality drive faster decision making, reporting and automation.

Open Banking is spurring us to do more

At the heart of open banking is trust in data security, quality and hence data governance principles are embedded into future technologies.

Open banking raises the bar for us all and elevates our focus on data quality, processes and automation, said Mrs Gray. It remains to be seen how the ANZ group customers will benefit ahead.
