COVID dominated the headlines in 2020 and changed the world. But that is just one of the significant factors shaping this decade. According to Gartner, leaders will have to grapple with a host of other challenges during the 2020s. On the positive side, this could lead to new business opportunities with technology advancements.

These are the top factors that could reshape business and how societies operate in the coming years, according to Gartner:

  • Global Pandemic
  • Market Crash and Recession
  • Systemic mistrust
  • Weak Productivity
  • Environment Concerns
  • Talent Shortage
  • Technology Advancement

Technology advancement will have a major impact

AI, Blockchain, Quantum Computing and the mass arrival of machine customers will change how organizations and societies operate.

There will be more frequent market disruptions and the emergence of what comes after digital: Autonomous business. This will change the landscape of the decade.

“We’re in for a decade of radical technology disruption. Now’s the time to get started”, said Daryl Plummer, Distinguished VP Analyst, during his presentation at virtual Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo™ 2020.

Machines soon will know more about your physical well-being than you do

Traditional technologies could tank making way to disruptive plays in new computing paradigms such as neuromorphic computing.

DNA Storage, Distributed Cloud, Digital Twins and Augmented Human are the new technology trends with significant potential to change the world. For more details, check this report here.

Talent Shortage

Despite an increase in unemployment rates globally, key talent shortages will continue to plague executives, noted Gartner. While COVID-19 has increased unemployment and underemployment, it has not created new pools of in-demand talent. Even small shortfalls of critical talent will corrode or destroy market positions.

Reconsider what types of skill sets will be needed in the post-COVID-19 world, and begin or increase reskilling programs during downtimes. Introduce agile learning as a core management philosophy and consider ways to widen the talent availability pool by rethinking remote work or gig economy options.
