After Amazon Go and JustWalkOut, the eCommerce giant has launched Amazon Dash Cart, a new “smart shopping cart” designed for small-to-medium-sized grocery trips fitting two bags. Amazon claims the Dash Cart “makes a quick grocery trip even quicker by allowing you to skip the checkout line”.

The company unveiled the Amazon Dash Cart, a tech-heavy shopping cart loaded with a weight sensor, coupon scanner and a screen at the top. The cart will be available sometime this year at the Amazon grocery store in Woodland Hills in California.

A combination of computer vision algorithms and sensors identify items shoppers put in the cart. “When you exit through the store’s Amazon Dash Cart lane, sensors automatically identify the cart, and your payment is processed using the credit card on your Amazon account”, Amazon said.

Here’s how it works:

  • Customers sign in with QR code via the Amazon App
  • Scan the items with the scanner on the cart
  • For items without a barcode, weigh the item – on the cart
  • How to pay: Just walk through the checkout lane. No checkout
  • Receipt emailed to the customer

Dash Cart is the latest avatar of the cashless and checkout-free technology unveiled by Amazon. The Dash Cart looks like a compact version of Amazon Go on wheels. The commonalities include the usage of QR code via Amazon app, cashless and no checkout. The Dash Cart though is aimed at small to medium-sized grocery trips.

Shoppers can also access the Alexa shopping list enabled by the screen on top of the cart, conveniently placed for the quick view enabling access to the Alexa Shopping List to check items off and view the subtotal.

Earlier this year, Amazon launched its JustWalkOut technology sales positioning itself as a retail technology service provider. With JustWalkOut, Amazon offers its Amazon Go technologies to retailers looking for a similarly convenient and smooth shopping experience.

Airport retailer CIBO Express Gourmet Market became the first retailer to debut the JustwalkOut technology. Unlike its app-enabled Amazon Go stores, shoppers have to swipe a credit card on entry.

Other retailers aren’t far behind in leveraging the latest technologies and making checkouts a priority targeting a smooth experience. Amazon is positioning itself with a differentiated approach in the crowded marketplace, vying for the customers’ attention. Amazon Go and Dash Cart are aimed at gaining customers’ trust with a technology-driven easy shopping experience.
