NAB is having difficulty filling open positions despite being a “good recruiting brand”. CEO Ross McEwan revealed that NAB has currently 800 open positions in technology and operations.

Mr McEwan highlighted three important areas Australian enterprises including NAB have to address:

  • Skills and Tech Talent
  • Productivity and Wage growth
  • Equal Opportunity for Women

NAB has 800 vacant roles in technology

Mr McEwan called upon Australian businesses and institutions to identify the skills and labour needed in the future.

“Our education curriculums need modernising. This is the only way we will keep up in the technology fields. NAB is working hard to develop talent through our technology internships and training.

But we still can’t fill roles – in fact, we have about 800 technology and operations roles vacant right now.

“We just haven’t made enough investment and don’t have enough people to fight cybercrime at scale,” says a Cybersecurity leader at EY Oceania.

Around 85% of Cyber Security leaders in Australia think outdated security approaches are failing in the face of modern threats.

“The second focus area is productivity and wage growth. Productivity improvements are the only way to achieve sustainable wage rises. We could do this by removing unnecessary regulations and making it easier to run a business.

Many small business owners have told NAB they have to spend 12 hours every week on government administration.”

It is unclear how NAB proposes to help business customers manage their businesses effectively by deploying AI solutions across NAB’s business banking services.

The third essential issue for economic growth is equal opportunity for women. We need to transform paid parental leave in support of a shared responsibility approach between men and women, noted Mr McEwan.
